Afloat.ie regrets to record the deaths of senior sailing sisters Susan Gray and Jennifer Hudson of Dun Laoghaire. They were the daughters of Toby Millar, architect to the Bank of Ireland, who was a leading sailing figure in Howth in the 1930s and '40s before the family moved to Dun Laoghaire.
There, Susan was to marry keen sailor Peter Gray - Olympic participant and Irish Sailing Association President, while Jennifer married Tom Hudson, a noted dinghy sailor - particularly in the Water Wags - and a talented photographer.
The combined achievements afloat of all "the Millar girls" and their families beneficially affected many areas of sailing, a particular highlight being the seven year detailed Round the World Cruise made by Peter & Susan Gray with their Rival 41 Waxwing. This was awarded the Irish Cruising Club's Rockabill Trophy in 2000 for their skill and seamanshipshown in bringing Waxwing through a storm of hurricane force while making the long passage from the Pacific islands to New Zealand.
Our condolences are with their extended families and many friends in sailing and beyond, they were remarkable representatives of sailing at its very best in Ireland.
