Boaters Reminded of Requirements for International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC)

16th June 2024
Department of Transport logo

The Department of Transport wishes to draw attention to the fact that some European Union member states require the operators of pleasure craft operating within their territorial waters to hold an International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC).

Resolution No. 40 of the Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), as amended, outlines the requirements for the issue of the ICC. Resolution No. 40 also lists the countries that have notified the UNECE Secretariat that they have accepted the Resolution.

An ICC issued by a government that has accepted Resolution No. 40 indicates that the ICC holder has demonstrated the level of competence required by Resolution No. 40 for the ICC to be issued.

Irish Sailing is appointed as an approved body to issue the ICC on behalf of the Department of Transport. Persons requiring an ICC should contact Irish Sailing directly:

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
