Italy and Spain have sent navy ships to support an international aid flotilla, which has come under Israeli drone attack while en route to Gaza.
As The Irish Independent reports, Italy's Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told the lower house of parliament that his department has sent one ship, and another is on its way.
A Spanish naval vessel will join the Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza to provide assistance and, if necessary, conduct rescues, according to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
As Afloat has reported, over 20 Irish volunteers are on board various vessels on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which came under Israeli drone attack, along with jamming communications, earlier this week.
Irish writer Naoise Dolan is with the Thousand Madleens to Gaza flotilla, which set sail with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition from Catania in Sicily.
Dolan told the Irish Independent: “Israel is currently committing ever graver atrocities as it advances its assault on Gaza City.”
"We know it has a history of attacking the flotilla and then following it up immediately with far graver assaults in Gaza.”
"We need to keep all eyes on Gaza. We cannot let their attacks on the flotilla deflect international attention from the genocide. Nor will those of us sailing be deterred: we stand with Palestinians and with human dignity no matter what, “she told the newspaper.
While condemning the Israeli government over the drone attacks Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan told the Dáil earlier this week that Ireland is not a “strong military power” and he could not “direct ‘marines’ or the Army Rangers” to rescue people.
