The global sailing community is preparing for the first-ever World Sailing Day on 28 May 2026.
The initiative, launched in The Hague, aims to unite the sport worldwide through a single coordinated annual event. Organisers say momentum is building, with clubs, marinas and marine businesses planning activities across multiple countries. The concept centres on “many local activations, one global moment” to promote sailing and increase participation.
Events are expected to include regattas, open days, marina showcases and waterfront activities. Industry sectors involved range from yacht clubs and sailing schools to tourism operators and marine manufacturers. Organisers said the initiative offers “a powerful collective signal for sailing” and a platform to engage new audiences.
With an estimated 1.2 billion people living within 10 kilometres of the coast, the potential reach is significant. A coordinated “Night Lights” display is also planned, encouraging vessels and waterfronts to illuminate 30 minutes after sunset. The date has been positioned at the start of the Northern Hemisphere sailing season to maximise participation.
Organisers said the event is designed to grow into an annual fixture, acting as a global season opener for the sport. Participation is open to organisations, businesses and individuals, with flexible formats to suit local communities.
