Environmental regulation, boating safety and the future of sustainable propulsion were among the key topics discussed at the latest meeting of the European Boating Association (EBA). Delegates from 18 countries met in Sweden in April 2026 to review financial, governance and policy matters affecting recreational boating across Europe.
The EBA, which brings together national boating organisations, confirmed its finances remain stable and announced the appointment of Laurent Kolly as treasurer following the retirement of Leif Nielsen. Ireland was represented by Simon Parker, who contributed to discussions on behalf of Irish boating interests.
Environmental pressures on rivers, lakes and coastal waters featured prominently on the agenda. Delegates also examined increasing regulatory requirements affecting recreational boat users across Europe.
Navigation reliability was another focus, including developments in electronic chart systems, wastewater management and the challenge of balancing environmental protection with continued access to waterways.
Future marine propulsion technologies were also discussed, with delegates considering hydrogen and other alternative fuels as part of the transition to lower-emission boating.
Safety and regulatory consistency across Europe were also reviewed, including differing national rules governing alcohol consumption aboard recreational vessels. The association also reported progress in developing digital communication systems to strengthen engagement with member organisations.
The Bulgarian Yachting Association was formally welcomed as the EBA's newest member. Looking ahead, the association confirmed meetings in Hamburg in October 2026, Denmark in spring 2027 and Basel in October 2027, with the Netherlands under consideration as host for a 2028 meeting.
Irish Sailing thanked Simon Parker for his continued work representing Ireland within the European Boating Association.
