Regular publication of nutrient-level data is one of 11 recommendations from a Joint Oireachtas committee on restoring Wexford’s Lady’s Island Lake. As Afloat has reported, the lake’s environment has deteriorated significantly.
The latest report by the Joint Committee on Climate, Environment notes that it is one of Ireland’s most significant saline lagoons and a designated Special Area of Conservation.
Cathaoirleach Naoise Ó Muirí highlighted the committee’s continued commitment to reversing the lake’s long‑term ecological decline, noting that Lady’s Island Lake was the very first issue taken up by the committee upon its establishment in May 2025.
Last month, the committee held a meeting in Wexford County Council’s offices - the first meeting outside the Leinster House campus - where members engaged with Wexford County Council executives, the newly established Strategic Oversight Group, and local community organisations.
Following the meeting, committee members also visited the lake to observe conditions firsthand.
“Lady’s Island Lake is an ecological, cultural and spiritual landmark. Its deterioration over many years is unacceptable. Having examined the CLEAR report, which clearly identified the causes of the crisis, we committed to supporting a coordinated and effective restoration effort,” Ó Muirí said.
“We are encouraged by the leadership shown by Wexford County Council and the dedication of local communities. This report is intended to support the momentum already underway. We look forward to continued engagement with all stakeholders to secure a lasting and positive future for Lady’s Island Lake,” he said.
The report sets out 11 recommendations aimed at ensuring long‑term restoration, transparency and public engagement. These include:
- Regular publication of nutrient‑level data
- Clear prioritisation of ecological and management objectives
- A dedicated restoration website for public access to information
- Enhanced public consultation and ongoing engagement with local groups
- Ensuring ecological expertise is central to decision‑making
- Capital investment for measures identified in the CLEAR report, including potential wetland construction
- Coordination with the EU LIFE Strategic Nature programme
- Review of septic tank grant schemes to support water‑quality improvements
