Boatbuilder Safehaven Marine of Youghal, Co. Cork, has just announced that it has been awarded the contract to build a new pilot boat for the Port of Blyth in northeast England.

The newbuild cutter will become the Munster-based company’s fourth Interceptor 48 pilot boat on the east coast of England and Scotland, where currently they serve at the ports of Montrose and Cromarty Firth. As for the Port of Blyth, it is recognised as one of the UK’s leading offshore energy support bases.

The Interceptor is powered by a pair of MAN 500 hp IMO Tier III engines, and according to Safehaven, it will be the 40th Pilot 48 to be built, showing the popularity and the respect the design has garnered.

The first of the Interceptor class began operating at ports globally in 2009.

Afloat is also to report more on the recent delivery of another Interceptor, the Miami, to the Port of Miami, Florida, USA.
