Three EU agencies are taking part in a joint coast guard exercise in the Adriatic Sea in cooperation with Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.
The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) headed by Irish woman Dr Susan Steele is leading the multi-purpose maritime operation, involving the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and Frontex, the border control agency.
The operation includes a search and rescue (SAR) exercise -SARex 2024- in the North Adriatic Sea area which will take place on October 2nd.
“The objective of the SARex 2024 is to enhance cooperation and coordination between the involved SAR authorities of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia as well as to gain heightened situational awareness and experience in the use of communication systems/channels,”the EFCA says.
It says the overall aim of the maritime operation is to “enhance European cooperation on coast guard functions by providing increased technical and operational assistance to the host member states by coordinating operational activities”.
The activities are being conducted in an operational area that includes Italian, Slovenia and Croatian sovereignty waters, contiguous zones, exclusive economic zones and international waters of Adriatic Sea.
Croatia, Italy and Slovenia are participating, and EFCA,as leading agency, contributes with one offshore patrol vessel, the Ocean Sentinel, one fixed wing aircraft, and different systems supporting the operation.
It says Frontex is supporting Croatia to provide three coastal patrol boats.
The European Coordination Centre, which is located within EFCA headquarters in Vigo, Spain, is hosting daily coordination meetings.
The EFCA offshore patrol vessel is part of the EMSA’s oil pollution fleet and will be ready to be activated in case support would be needed in the event of oil pollution incidents in EU waters, it says.
