Newcastle RNLI’s volunteer crew launched the inshore lifeboat on Wednesday evening (31 July) after the coastguard received a call about a dog in distress in the water close to Murlough beach on Northern Ireland’s Co Down coast.
The lifeboat was launched at around 7.40pm on Wednesday as it was feared the dog’s owner may have attempted to enter the water to rescue the dog.
The volunteer crew of three quickly located the dog, which was struggling to stay afloat. The crew managed to retrieve the dog from the water and secured it on the lifeboat before making their way to the owner at Murlough.
Speaking after the call-out, Dave Bowden, Newcastle RNLI Llfeboat operations manager said: “Thanks to the swift and coordinated actions of our volunteer crew and Newcastle Coastguard, this dog was rescued and brought to safety.
“Our advice is never to enter the water after your dog but to try and call them back to you from a place of safety. If you are concerned, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
