The Courtmacsherry RNLI lifeboat "Val Adnams" launched at 11.35 am today following reports of a surfer in distress off Garrettstown beach, West Cork. Under the command of Coxswain Ken Cashman, the crew of five quickly reached the location of the casualty. By 12 noon, the lifeboat located the surfer, who was drifting offshore. He was safely brought aboard and assessed by the crew.
The surfer was then transported to Courtmacsherry Pier, where he received warm clothing and a hot shower. His companion, who had raised the alarm, reunited with him shortly before 1 pm at the Lifeboat Station.
Both expressed relief to be safely ashore. A local surfer provided assistance by lending the distressed surfer a larger board to help keep him afloat.
The Old Head/Seven Heads Coast Guard unit also arrived swiftly to coordinate shoreline searches. "Minutes mattered in a callout like this," said Station Launch Authority Philip White, praising the rapid response of the Lifeboat crew. He also emphasised the importance of contacting rescue authorities promptly by calling 999 or 112 for the Coast Guard.
