The RNLI from Achill Island responded to a call from the Irish Coast Guard on Thursday, 22 May. Two fishermen required assistance after their propeller became fouled while fishing near Curraun and Mulranny.
The all-weather lifeboat ‘Sam and Ada Moody’ launched around 11am with a crew of seven. It quickly located the stranded fishermen, who were safe and in good spirits, wearing life jackets.
The lifeboat crew assessed the situation and towed the fishing vessel back to Curraun pier. Conditions at sea were calm, with good visibility and pleasant weather. The lifeboat returned to the station around 12pm.
Ciaran Needham, Achill Island RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said, “Despite the best of planning, even experienced seafarers can need help. The fishermen made the right decision by calling for assistance and wearing life jackets.”
He advised, “If you or someone nearby needs help on the water, call 999 or 112 for the Coast Guard. Our volunteers are always ready to assist.”
