Achill Island RNLI was called to assist three paddleboarders at Keem Bay on Saturday, 16 August. The request came from the Irish Coast Guard during the station’s Open Day as part of Féile Chill Damhnait.
A lifeguard noticed the paddleboarders were overdue returning from Moyteoge Head. Concerns grew due to the easterly breeze affecting the area. The Sligo-based helicopter, Rescue 118, was also dispatched to aid.
The all-weather lifeboat ‘Sam and Ada Moody’ launched shortly after 3 pm, with six crew members led by Coxswain Declan Corrigan. Conditions were favourable, with sunny weather and calm seas.
Upon arrival, the lifeboat found one paddleboarder had returned to shore. A local fishing boat had earlier assisted the other two before the RNLI crew arrived.
Coxswain Declan Corrigan remarked, “The paddleboarders made the right choice to head to a lifeguarded beach. Quick-thinking lifeguards called the Coast Guard for assistance.”
He added, “This had a happy ending thanks to everyone involved. We urge anyone seeing someone in distress to call 999 or 112. Our teams will always respond.”
