Bangor RNLI volunteers came to the aid of a motorboater after a vessel lost power in Belfast Lough on Wednesday evening. Belfast Coastguard requested the launch at 6.10 pm following reports of a 22ft motorboat adrift around half a mile from Bangor Marina.
The lifeboat, helmed by John Bell with three crew members on board, launched seven minutes later and made best speed for the casualty vessel. On arrival, the crew found the lone occupant safe and well but unable to continue due to engine failure. Helm John Bell decided the safest option was to tow the boat to Bangor Harbour before completing an alongside tow into the marina pontoons.
Following the call-out, Bangor RNLI Launch Authority Tom Bell reminded all boat users to prepare carefully before heading afloat.
"As we enjoy a long spell of hot summer weather, we would encourage anyone planning a trip to sea to go prepared," he said. "Always wear a lifejacket or suitable flotation device for your activity and always carry a means of communication such as a VHF radio or mobile phone in a waterproof pouch."
He also advised boat owners to understand how to operate and maintain their engines, carry essential tools and spare parts, and to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if they get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble.
