Wicklow RNLI volunteers brought two people to safety on Friday afternoon (17 July) after their six-metre boat developed mechanical problems eight miles north-east of Wicklow harbour.
The all-weather lifeboat Bridie O’Shea slipped its mooring shortly after 4.10pm under the command of coxswain Nick Keogh.
Twenty minutes later, the lifeboat crew located the casualty just south of Greystones Harbour. Conditions on scene were favourable with a calm sea and good visibility.
Keogh carried out an assessment of the boat, which was found to have suffered engine failure. With no means to get back to port under its own power, it was determined the best course of action was to take the vessel under tow.
The casualty vessel was then secured alongside at Greystones Harbour and the two people landed safely ashore just after 5.15pm.
Speaking after the call-out, launch authority Adrian O’Connor said: “This was a quick response by our volunteer crew following the coastguard pager alert. I’d like to remind anyone going on the water in this good weather to have a suitable means of calling for assistance. If you see anyone in trouble on the water, please call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.”
