New Year Brings Updated Notification Requirements for Marine Accidents

27th December 2025
Department of Transport logo

As previously reported on Afloat.ie, the Department of Transport confirmed in April that the Marine Accident Investigation Unit (MAIU) would replace the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) as the State’s independent body investigating marine casualties.

The MAIU becomes the designated marine accident investigation authority in the State on 1 January 2026, as legislated for under the Merchant Shipping (Investigation of Marine Accidents) Act 2025.

Section 17 of the Act sets out the statutory obligations for notification of marine accidents, immediately on becoming aware of a marine accident having occurred or commenced, or as soon as practicable thereafter.

Notifications of occurrences of marine accidents should be directed to the MAIU by telephone to +353 1 6768139 (24/7) or by email to [email protected].

For more on these changes, see Marine Notice No 66 of 2025 attached below.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
