The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI have issued a joint water safety appeal ahead of Christmas.
The warning targets festive swimmers and seasonal dippers, as well as people planning coastal walks during the holiday period.
The agencies urge anyone entering the water to check weather, wind and tide conditions before swimming.
They advise swimmers to enter slowly to reduce the risk of cold water shock and to always swim within their depth.
Bright swim caps and tow floats are recommended to improve visibility, especially in winter conditions.
People are urged to swim with others and to tell someone ashore their plans and expected return time.
“If you’re struggling in the water, float to live,” the agencies advise.
Anyone in difficulty, or witnessing an emergency, should call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
The appeal also extends to coastal walkers during the Christmas break.
The agencies warn that winter seas can be unpredictable and that waves may break over promenades, piers and paths.
Walkers are advised to stay back from cliff edges, check tide times and carry a fully charged mobile phone.
In an emergency along the coast, the public is asked to dial 999 or 112 and request the Coast Guard.
As the year draws to a close, the organisations thanked search and rescue volunteers who remain on call 24 hours a day, year-round.
