Water safety agencies have issued a public warning ahead of the May Bank Holiday weekend. The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are urging all water users to prioritise safety.
The period marks the start of the boating season, with many vessels returning to the water after winter. Boat owners are advised to complete pre-launch checks. These include hull condition, engines, fuel systems and onboard safety equipment. Users are also urged to check weather forecasts, tides and wind conditions before heading afloat.
Authorities stress the importance of wearing lifejackets and carrying reliable communication devices. They recommend informing someone ashore of plans and expected return times. A spokesperson said preparation and awareness are critical. “Having the right safety equipment saves lives,” they said.
Training and safe speed are also highlighted as key safety measures for all recreational craft users.
In an emergency, the public is advised to call 112 or use VHF Channel 16 to contact the Coast Guard.
