INEOS Britannia skipper Sir Ben Ainslie sought to downplay reports of his mugging at knifepoint in Barcelona last weekend.

According to Marine Industry News, it emerged that the four-time Olympic gold medallist was approached on Saturday night (24 August) by a group who threatened him with a knife and made off with his €20,000 Rolex watch.

In a statement, Sir Ben said: “Like in all big cities, you can be affected by opportunistic crime and my situation is no different. This is now a matter with the local authorities.”

Sir Ben is team principal and skipper of INEOS Britannia currently competing in the Louis Vuitton Cup, a round-robin prelude to determine the official challenger for the America’s Cup this October.
