The Government of Italy has officially announced that Naples will host the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup in 2027. This event marks the first time Italy will serve as the host country for the competition.

As regular Afloat readers know, Cup holders, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Emirates Team New Zealand, attempted to have the Cup staged on its home waters of Auckland, but the country's Government pulled back from the idea, citing other priorities in March.

Andrea Abodi, Italian Minister for Sport and Youth, expressed his excitement: "The choice of Italy, and Naples in particular, represents a tremendous opportunity to enhance our territory, boost tourism, and promote sports."

“We’re bringing it to the people,” said Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton. “There’s a raw spirit and pride in Italy that just feels right for the Cup.”

And maybe a little dangerous—Dalton admits this move puts the Defender right into the lion’s den, with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli syndicate likely to receive thunderous home support.

The Cup will take place under the shadow of Mt Vesuvius and along the vibrant Naples waterfront. "This achievement will generate a substantial economic impact on our territory," noted Gaetano Manfredi, Mayor of Naples.

The event aims to promote initiatives for sea education and economy while accelerating the redevelopment of Bagnoli, where the teams' bases will be located.

Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, added, "We are proud to announce that the 38th America's Cup will be held in Bagnoli, Naples."

The waterfront races, say promoters, will showcase Naples' beauty and history, providing a platform for local entrepreneurship and skills development.
