The Region of Sardinia and the City of Cagliari have been confirmed as hosts for the first Preliminary Regatta of the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup in May 2026.
The event will take place in the Gulf of Angels, off Cagliari’s Port, from 21 to 24 May 2026, organisers announced at a press event in the city’s cruise terminal. Five teams have entered, sailing one‑design foiling AC40 yachts. One will be crewed by Women and Youth America’s Cup sailors.
The regatta will open the ‘Road to Naples’, ahead of the main America’s Cup event in Naples from May to July 2027. Teams will first race in fleet format. The top two will then compete in a final to decide the regatta winner.
Franco Cuccureddu, Regional Tourism Councillor, said securing the event took “complex” negotiations and thanked partners, including Sport e Salute and the Italian Government.
“Sardinia has a deep bond with sailing,” he said, noting the island’s history with Azzurra and the presence of the Luna Rossa base in Cagliari.
Diego Nepi Molineris, CEO of Sport e Salute, said the event confirms Cagliari’s status in sailing and will help promote innovation and sustainability.
Alessandra Todde, President of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, described the regatta as “international recognition” of the island’s sailing credentials and a boost for sport tourism.
Italy’s Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, said beginning the America’s Cup journey in Italian waters reflects the nation’s sailing tradition and global sporting role.
Event Director Leslie Ryan said planning is well advanced, with a racecourse visible from shore, a race village and spectator facilities in Cagliari.
Further details on race format, timings and fan opportunities will be released closer to the event. A second America’s Cup presentation in Naples is scheduled for 21 January 2026.
