Limerick sailors have it every which way, with the option of sailing on the fresh waters of the inland sea of Lough Derg to the northeast, or down the mighty and salty estuary of the River Shannon to the southwest, toward nearby ports or far oceanic horizons. Many of them do both, so it seems completely natural that the city’s own ocean voyager Pat Lawless should be the focal point of a multi-purpose fundraiser afloat and ashore at Garrykennedy Sailing Club on the south shore of Lough Derg on Saturday, April 18th.
Outsiders might think that Garrykennedy SC is homeless as its premises are notional, but its members reckon they have all the advantages as they have two clubhouses - their boisterous après sailing takes place in one of two characterful harbourside pubs, Larkin’s or Ciss Ryan’s.
The header poster says it all, or most of it, and our western correspondent amplifies it with the info:
“Clubs just don’t run themselves as we all know, and under Garrykennedy SC Commodore Dan O'Connell, was a keen racer in Galway Bay Sailing Club from the 1980s before moving closer to home on the lake. He leads an organised and reliable group around the lake that provide friendly good sailing and fun, and at modest costs for the membership.
“Pat Lawless, whom we all know, is competing in the Golden Globe and is supported by past Commodore and Nenagh Auctioneer Brendan O'Connor. Brendan is fundraising for Pat, and plans to have an auction after the April 18th race, and a talk by Pat in Ciss Ryan’s . He is gathering a few interesting pieces, and is making a call nationally on Irelands numerous “sailing wives, widows and partners” to check under their stairs or garages and put some gear together that is sitting idle and taking up space.
Pat Lawless’s boat of choice for the Golden Globe is Green Rebel, a Saltram Saga 36.
“You never know what might be surplus with boat modernisations, or lying idle from previous generations. It might be of value to a gracious old craft that is being rejuvenated. Brendan can be contacted and can arrange collection from the main sailing centres around the country, provided you do the cave clearout in the next week. It all sounds like a good start to the season at Garykennedy, so contact Brendan on 086 6660807 or his daughter and club Hon Sec Sarah at 086 1985803”.
There’s a busy day coming up on Lough Derg on Saturday April 18th.
