Seashore discovery walks with marine artist and photographer Vincent Hyland are among activities planned for “Discover Derrynane”, a weekend family festival hosted by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in south Kerry.
Hyland, who is based in Derrynane,is an outdoor educationalist who has been recording the coastal plant and animal biodiversity above and below water in this area since 1990.
He possesses the single biggest photographic, audio, and video archive available to the area, which serves as a valuable record of the area’s changing biodiversity.
Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW Kieran O’Donnell said that the festival offers “so many opportunities to explore nature and marine life and take part in some superb activities”.
“The festival also provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the spectacular landscape and culture of Derrynane,” he said.
Most of Daniel O’Connell’s historic demesne at Derrynane now forms Derrynane National Historic Park, managed by the Heritage Services section of the OPW.
Spanning 300 acres, the park boasts beautiful gardens, extensive coastline and beaches, natural oak woodland, and archaeological sites.
Along with Seashore Discovery Walks with Vincent Hyland, the programme offers Forest Bathing and Sunset Yoga with Louise Weinzweig and Photography Workshops with Patrick Kavanagh.
“Discover Derrynane” takes place from the afternoon of Friday June 14th to Sunday June 16th.
