Royal Cork Yacht Club surged up the leaderboard on Day 4 of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, breaking into the top five overall after a strong showing in Newport, Rhode Island. The Crosshaven crew, skippered by Anthony O'Leary, delivered a standout second-place finish in Race 10 and consistent sailing across the day to sit fifth overall, marking the best Irish performance of the regatta to date.

Darren Wright's Howth Yacht Club team also impressed, taking fourth place in Race 11 to climb to 13th overall, while Dave Maguire's Royal Irish Yacht Club crew fought through mixed results to remain close in 15th. With one race left to sail, Ireland’s three-strong contingent remains well positioned, led by Royal Cork, recognised as the world’s oldest yacht club.

The day’s headlines were dominated by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, who vaulted into second overall with finishes of 5-1-1. Skipper Ben Mumford praised his crew for their work in challenging conditions, saying: “It felt amazing … everybody just working together, that’s what got us around the racecourse and into podium position today.”

San Diego Yacht Club, the defending champions, retained the overall lead despite a mixed set of results, including a race win followed by 16th and ninth-place finishes. Their advantage has been cut to just seven points, with Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club also in close pursuit, nine points behind the leaders.

Behind the top three, a tightly packed group of five boats—separated by only 12 points—will contest the remaining podium places.

The regatta will conclude on Saturday, with the final race scheduled for 1pm (EDT).

New York Yacht Club’s biennial Invitational Cup

Ireland has a proud history in New York Yacht Club’s biennial Invitational Cup, with Irish participation from the very start and a podium result in 2019.

In 2009, two Irish Clubs,  Royal St. George in Dun Laoghaire and Royal Cork in Crosshaven, entered into New York's newest sailing competition that was reminiscent of Newport’s America’s Cup days when 19 yacht club teams from 14 nations descended on this “City by the Sea”.

The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is a competition between yacht clubs, with strict eligibility rules ensuring that each team is comprised exclusively of amateur sailors.

The competition, which was first run in 2009, has drawn entries from 49 clubs from 22 nations on all six inhabited continents.

The New York Yacht Club won the inaugural event in 2009, with the Royal Canadian Yacht Club winning in 2011 and 2013, England's Royal Thames Yacht Club winning in 2015 and Southern Yacht Club from New Orleans winning in 2017.

In 2019 the regatta was sailed for the first time in the New York Yacht Club’s fleet of IC37 yachts, and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, from Australia, became the first Southern Hemisphere club to win the trophy. And it was in this edition that Anthony O’Leary’s Royal Cork team took the bronze medal.
