Royal Cork Yacht Club concluded a strong campaign at the 2025 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup by finishing fifth overall, the best result among the three Irish entrants in Newport, Rhode Island. The Crosshaven team, led by Anthony O'Leary, the only overseas club to have competed in all nine editions of the biennial regatta, delivered a series that included podium results in Races 9 and 10 and ended the week firmly inside the top five.

Darren Wright's Howth Yacht Club closed on a high with third place in the final race, securing 12th overall, while Dave Maguire's Royal Irish Yacht Club crew placed 16th after a consistent week of mid-fleet racing. Together, the three Irish clubs ensured strong representation in what is widely regarded as the premier amateur big-boat sailing competition.

The overall title went to San Diego Yacht Club, who overcame a mid-fleet struggle in the deciding race to overhaul their rivals and clinch the championship for a second time. Tactician Adam Roberts credited a late surge: “It starts with that leeward mark rounding … we had a quick tack, found our wheels, had clean air … and that’s what it takes.”

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club finished second overall after holding fourth in the final race, while Royal Vancouver Yacht Club completed the podium in third following a strong midweek charge. Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts, claimed fourth ahead of Royal Cork.

With sun and steady breezes on Narragansett Bay, the final day delivered dramatic swings in fortune. At one stage, the virtual lead in the regatta shifted three times between San Diego, Royal Hong Kong and Royal Vancouver before San Diego’s late rally sealed the outcome.

The New York Yacht Club, hosts of the event, won the final race but finished ninth overall.

Irish Results (Final Standings):

  • Royal Cork Yacht Club – 5th (93 points)

New York Yacht Club’s biennial Invitational Cup

Ireland has a proud history in New York Yacht Club’s biennial Invitational Cup, with Irish participation from the very start and a podium result in 2019.

In 2009, two Irish Clubs,  Royal St. George in Dun Laoghaire and Royal Cork in Crosshaven, entered into New York's newest sailing competition that was reminiscent of Newport’s America’s Cup days when 19 yacht club teams from 14 nations descended on this “City by the Sea”.

The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is a competition between yacht clubs, with strict eligibility rules ensuring that each team is comprised exclusively of amateur sailors.

The competition, which was first run in 2009, has drawn entries from 49 clubs from 22 nations on all six inhabited continents.

The New York Yacht Club won the inaugural event in 2009, with the Royal Canadian Yacht Club winning in 2011 and 2013, England's Royal Thames Yacht Club winning in 2015 and Southern Yacht Club from New Orleans winning in 2017.

In 2019 the regatta was sailed for the first time in the New York Yacht Club’s fleet of IC37 yachts, and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, from Australia, became the first Southern Hemisphere club to win the trophy. And it was in this edition that Anthony O’Leary’s Royal Cork team took the bronze medal.
