Competitors in this weekend's first race of the DBSC Turkey Shoot Winter Sailing Series on Dublin Bay are being warned to stay away from rocks at the North end of Dalkey Island with Sunday's first race starting two hours after low water. While it may appear obvious for sailors to steer around all rocks this particular outcrop has 'given some trouble' this season, say organisers, who have issued a useful reminder of the submerged hazard. Known locally as 'Leac Buidhe', the rocks in Muglins Sound are at the following approximate GPS co-ordinates: 53 16.64 N 06 05.13 W

A note published in this year's DBSC yearbook also refers to the rock:  When approaching Muglins Sound from Scotsman's Bay, boats are advised to keep to the port-hand side of the Sound, avoiding the Leac Buidhe rock on their starboard side at 53 16.616N, 06 05.149W

ISORA sailor Peter Ryan has been in touch (scroll down) to warn of other rocks to the south–west of the Muglins.

Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) will again include an incentive to get people sailing this winter, especially newcomers, in its seven race Turkey Shoot 2015 series. Racing starts on Sunday, November 1. Racing is under modified ECHO (aka FECHO).

Cruisers, cruising boats, one-designs and boats that do not normally race are welcome to participate.

Any competitor boat that takes out a non–sailor (new to sailing) as a crew member will get a 2% discount on it’s FECHO handicap that day. The non-sailor will qualify as such for three races if taken. DBSC accepts that there may be overlaps with

non-sailors so rules will again evolve in the spirit it is meant. Names will be registered before sailing each day.

Entry fee €70.00 – includes temporary membership of Dublin Bay S.C. and the Royal Irish Y.C.

Entry forms are downloadable below.

Sailing instructions will be available on Sunday 1st November and will be emailed to entrants beforehand.

After sailing, food will be available to competitors in the Royal Irish Y.C.

Entries to: Donal P. O’Sullivan, 72 Clonkeen Drive, Foxrock, D.18 before Friday 30th October.

It’s for days like this that we sail Flying Fifteens on Dublin Bay, a sunny warm afternoon with a nice force 3/4 from the SE on excellent courses set by Suzanne McGarry and her team on Freebird. There were two races, the first won by Ian Mathews & Keith Poole in Gruffalo and the second won by Chris Doorly & Alan Green in Frequent Flyer.

It was the last Saturday of the DBSC summer series and the thirteen boats that turned out enjoyed great conditions and close racing. Coughlin & Marshal were in great form sailing particularly well having two thirds.

In Race 1 Mathews was out of the blocks quickly and led all the way, Doorly & Green were second close behind and chased Mathews all the way, these two extended their lead, behind it was a closer affair but Coughlin & Marshal managed to pull ahead of the Cahills to take third place. It was not a very shifty day so places tended to stay as they were over the four laps.

In Race 2 the line was square, most boats headed in to the right, Green helming this race, went more left out to sea hoping for more wind, it was close at the weather mark but Mathews coming from the right got the lead, Green was second followed closely by Coughlin and the Meaghers. Green and Mathews pulled ahead and Green got close on the second beat tacked inside Mathews to take advantage of one of the few shifts of the day to close the gap. On the last beat Mathews outhaul came undone, he managed to half fix it but Green took advantage and just nipped it on the line. Behind Coughlin and the Meaghers were having a great ding dong sail but Coughlin got into third.

It was great to see so many boats out racing, the turn outs this season has been fantastic. Thanks must go to Ronan Beirne and his committee for encouraging people to get out even it is isn’t with their usual crew or helm. Next week the NYC Frostbite Series starts and will continue into November.

The class travels to Lough Derg in October for the Western Championships. While other classes fold up their sails the flying fifteen class have two more events!

#fireball – 'I see no flags' – To paraphrase Nelson, I saw no flags last night flying from the DMYC to signify that racing in the DBSC Tuesday Series was cancelled writes Cormac Bradley. This is intended only as an observational statement not as a commentary on flag protocol.

The weather forecast for the evening wasn't that attractive – winds in the high teens with gusts of 33 knots. The seascape was grey and there was a dampness in the air, all in stark contrast to the evening we had enjoyed last week.

At 18:15, viewed from my office window, there was some activity in the DMYC dinghy park but not a great deal. There was wind but not what had been forecast!

However, there were no flags flying to suggest that at this early stage that racing was in jeopardy. I left for home slightly thereafter and when I returned neither the harbour nor Scotsman's Bay had any dinghy activity. Coming across one of the Fireball crews, I established that racing had been cancelled.

Tomorrow, Thursday, sees the biennial Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta start and eight Fireballs are entered for the event. They will enjoy racing over the Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning.

Round Ireland Yacht Race Information

The Round Ireland Yacht Race is Ireland's classic offshore yacht race starts from Wicklow Sailing Club (WSC) and is organised jointly with the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and the Royal Irish Yacht Club (RIYC). This page details the very latest updates from the 2008 race onwards including the race schedule, yacht entries and the all-important race updates from around the 704-mile course. Keep up to date with the Round Ireland Yacht Race here on this one handy reference page.

2020 Round Ireland Race

The 2020 race, the 21st edition, was the first race to be rescheduled then cancelled.

Following Government restrictions over COVID-19, a decision on the whether or not the 2020 race can be held was made on April 9 2020 to reschedule the race to Saturday, August 22nd. On July 27th, the race was regrettably cancelled due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19.

Because of COVID-19, the race had to have a virtual launch party at the Royal Irish Yacht Club for its 21st edition

In spite of the pandemic, however, a record entry was in prospect for 2020 with 50 boats entered with four weeks to go to the race start. The race was also going big on size and variety to make good on a pre-race prediction that the fleet could reach 60. An Irish offshore selection trial also looked set to be a component part of the 2020 race.

The rescheduling of the race to a news date emphasises the race's national significance, according to Afloat here

Sixteen pioneers entered that race with Brian Coad’s Raasay of Melfort returning home after six days at sea to win the inaugural race.
