The first skippers for the 2026 Vendée Arctique – Les Sables d’Olonne have been announced. Organisers confirmed entries and race management details at a press briefing on 2 April.
The solo, non-stop race will act as a key qualifier for the 2028 Vendée Globe. It is classified as a Grade 2 event, the highest level below a round-the-world race. “The Vendée Arctique is not a preparatory race: it is a race in its own right,” said Alain Leboeuf, President of the Vendée Department. He added that the event marks the start of a new competitive cycle towards the 2028 circumnavigation.
A major change has been introduced for 2026. For the first time, skippers will choose where to cross the Arctic Circle, rather than follow a fixed route. This flexible format is expected to test the strategy and weather analysis. It will also take IMOCA boats to extreme northern latitudes that have not previously been raced.
Race Director Mathias Louarn will lead an experienced management team. He is supported by deputies Pierre Hays and Claire Renou. Skipper Alan Roberts joins the team, alongside Vendée Globe winner Yannick Bestaven as safety consultant.
Ten skippers have been confirmed in the initial line-up. The fleet includes 30 per cent women and 40 per cent international competitors across five nations. Among those entered are Ambrogio Beccaria, Francesca Clapcich, Sam Goodchild and Violette Dorange.
Organisers said 70 per cent of entrants are first-time competitors in both the Vendée Arctique and Vendée Globe. Registration remains open until 11 May 2026.
A public race village will run from 30 May to 7 June in Les Sables d’Olonne. The programme will include exhibitions, skipper presentations and environmental events. Racing will form a key milestone on the road to the 2028 Vendée Globe.
