On the eve of the international Tall Ships race festival in Belfast – in which Asgard II had been a regular participant – the Department of Defence has said that it is considering postponing plans for a replacement of Ireland's sail training vessel lost in France nearly a year ago and the abandonment of the national sail training programme altogether. The news is revealed in today's Irish Times here by its marine correspondent Lorna Siggins. A petition for Asgard's recovery or the provision of a replacement vessel is here.
