Since 1986, the Dublin-based Irish Nautical Trust has helped to preserve maritime heritage while offering maritime skills training to young adults.

The Trust’s Maritime Training Course is a full-time programme that provides students with practical experience in navigation, seamanship, radio communication, and more, preparing them for careers in the maritime industry.

Held at the Poolbeg Boat and Yacht Club, the course spans 12 to 14 weeks and combines both classroom instruction and real-world application. Graduates gain certifications, experience, and connections that position them for careers in Dublin Port, the Irish Sea, or internationally.

The programme is open to adults 18 and older, primarily those in between jobs or looking to change their direction. It welcomes those eager to explore life on the water and develop a professional skillset. Success stories include graduates who have gone on to prestigious maritime colleges or joined the green energy sector, showcasing the diverse opportunities available.

Visit the Irish Nautical Trust sign-up page for more details. Applications are open now for the next course, which starts in January 2025.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
