John Leech Elected Commodore at ICRA National Conference

John Leech has been elected Commodore of the Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) following elections at its National Conference and AGM.

The event took place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the Royal St George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire and featured a packed morning schedule.

Almost 50 members attended the conference, which combined elections, keynote speakers, awards and a sailors’ forum.

Keynote speakers

Michael Boyd received recognition for captaining the Royal Irish Admiral’s Cup team and also addressed the conference as a keynote speaker.

Boyd, a former RORC Commodore, outlined his role as Chef d’Équipe for the Royal Irish Yacht Club team in the revived Admiral’s Cup series and reflected on the 2025 campaign.

The crew of Headcase were honoured for their J24 World Championship victory and shared insights from a standout season.

The team also secured a third consecutive European title, won the inaugural Keelboat Champions Cup and earned a World Sailing Team of the Year nomination.

Pamela Lee was recognised for her Class40 campaign and spoke about her #EmpowHer offshore racing project.

Lee outlined her pathway from dinghy sailing on Lough Derg to international offshore racing and her ambition to compete in the Route du Rhum in 2026.

She also discussed campaign funding, professional team management and plans to attract international Class40 entries to this summer’s Round Ireland Race.

ICRA's Boats of the Year

James Dwyer retained the IRC Boat of the Year award, while Pat Tanner and crew claimed the Echo Boat of the Year trophy.

IRC, ECHO, YTC and ORC

Nigel Biggs, National Handicap Officer and chair of the Irish Sailing Handicap Working Group, presented an overview of recognised handicap systems.

His briefing included details of the YTC system, which is due to become available to Irish keelboats from 2026.

A sailors’ forum followed, with discussion on IRC, YTC, alongside views from owners calling for a balanced approach to the rival ORC.

ORC advocates noted claims that more than 100 Irish boats are now using the system.

2026 Events

The morning also included updates from Cork Week Regatta, ISORA, SCORA and Round Ireland Race organisers.

The conference began at 10.30 am, followed by the AGM, and concluded at lunchtime.

The Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) Information

The creation of the Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) began in a very low key way in the autumn of 2002 with an exploratory meeting between Denis Kiely, Jim Donegan and Fintan Cairns in the Granville Hotel in Waterford, and the first conference was held in February 2003 in Kilkenny.

While numbers of cruiser-racers were large, their specific locations were widespread, but there was simply no denying the numerical strength and majority power of the Cork-Dublin axis. To get what was then a very novel concept up and running, this strength of numbers had to be acknowledged, and the first National Championship in 2003 reflected this, as it was staged in Howth.

ICRA was run by a dedicated group of volunteers each of whom brought their special talents to the organisation. Jim Donegan, the elder statesman, was so much more interested in the wellbeing of the new organisation than in personal advancement that he insisted on Fintan Cairns being the first Commodore, while the distinguished Cork sailor was more than content to be Vice Commodore.

ICRA National Championships

Initially, the highlight of the ICRA season was the National Championship, which is essentially self-limiting, as it is restricted to boats which have or would be eligible for an IRC Rating. Boats not actually rated but eligible were catered for by ICRA’s ace number-cruncher Denis Kiely, who took Ireland’s long-established native rating system ECHO to new heights, thereby providing for extra entries which brought fleet numbers at most annual national championships to comfortably above the hundred mark, particularly at the height of the boom years.

ICRA Nationals 2025

The date for the 2025 edition of the ICRA National Championships is June 25-28, 2025.

The championships will be sailed as part of Kinsale Yacht Club's Sovereign's Cup.
