The Irish Sea Offshore Racing Association (ISORA) has launched a new Under 25 Sailor Prize aimed at increasing youth participation as the first gun is fired at the weekend. The season-long award will apply to the 2026 campaign and is open to eligible sailors on Irish and Welsh registered boats. The initiative targets one of offshore racing’s key challenges — attracting and retaining younger sailors.

“We want young sailors to see ISORA as a home for their racing ambitions,” said ISORA Committee spokesperson Barry O'Connor. “This prize gives them a reason to race across the season and be recognised.”

Points will be awarded based on class results across the full ISORA calendar, covering both offshore and coastal races. Each Under 25 sailor on a qualifying boat earns points, not just the skipper. A class wins scores 10 points, with points awarded down to 10th place.

To qualify, boats must carry at least two Under 25 sailors in fully crewed entries, or one in double-handed races. Sailors must compete in a minimum of three races to be eligible for the overall prize. Eligibility is based on age at the first race of the season. The scheme is open across the Irish Sea fleet, including boats racing from ports such as Dún Laoghaire, Pwllheli and Howth.

ISORA said the prize also aims to encourage owners to include younger sailors in their crews. “It is good for the fleet and the wider sailing community,” the spokesperson added.

The association is in discussions with potential sponsors to establish a named trophy.
