NI 49erFX Duo McElwaine and Barbour Launch Crowdfunding Drive for LA 2028 Olympic Campaign

Northern Ireland youth sailing duo Erin McIlwaine and Ellen Barbour have launched a crowdfunding drive for their campaign to compete in the 49erFX class at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The pair were added to Irish Sailing’s senior squad at the end of last year following a breakthrough season on the 49erFX circuit, as previously reported on Afloat.ie.

This included the major milestone of bronze medals for the women at the 2025 U23 49erFX World Championships in Copenhagen.

But despite their rapidly improving record, not to mention their skills and dedication, success does not come cheap for McIlwaine, from Kilkeel, who sails with Newcastle Yacht Club and trains with the Royal St George Yacht Club, and Barbour, from Whitehead, who represents County Antrim Yacht Club.

The cost of training camps, competing in international regattas, coaching, and equipment all adds up — which is why the duo have launched a crowdfunding campaign via GoFundMe for supporters to help back their dream of representing Ireland in the 49erFX in LA.

Every pound contributed represents one mile between their home base and the City of Angels, the distance they’ve set as their fundraising target.

For more on their campaign, see the GoFundMe page HERE.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
