The first Cape 26 one-design sportsboat from Wicklow-based Mills Design is touring European sailing centres following its delivery to Italy in September.

The first Cape 26, designed by Wicklow-based naval architect Mark Mills, has arrived in Europe, with Hull No. 1, Ciao!, beginning a promotional tour following its delivery to Italian agents Negri Nautica in September.

In his latest design update, Mills says the new sportsboat has been visiting sailing centres across Europe, including Saint-Tropez, with the tour continuing through the winter.

As Afloat.ie reported in June, Ciao! was launched and trialled in Cape Town before being prepared for shipment to Italy, where plans are under way to develop a Mediterranean racing circuit for the class in 2027.

The 7.8-metre Cape 26 is designed for four-person one-design racing, with a lifting keel, backstay-less rig and cockpit arrangement that allows crews to race without hiking.

First announced by Mills Design in March 2025, the Cape 26 is intended as a smaller, more easily transported sister to the internationally successful Cape 31 one-design.

The latest European tour marks another step towards establishing the new class beyond its South African birthplace.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
