Eighteen boats lined up to contest the title on the waters of Lough Ree.
All nine Irish crews who travelled to the World Championships in Plymouth returned to the start line in LRYC, where competitors were greeted on Day 1 by a familiar forecast of strong winds. Experience showed at the top of the fleet across three hard-fought races, with several teams pushing for early control.
At the end of the opening day, newly crowned World Champions Headcase shared the lead with Conor Haughton’s Jupiter from Wicklow Sailing Club. Both posted equal scorelines (Headcase 1,4,1; Jupiter 2,1,3). In the Silver Fleet, Kilcullen from Howth Yacht Club made the strongest start to claim the overnight lead.

Day 2 brought more moderate and shifty conditions, but Race Officer Alan Algeo successfully delivered four races in sunshine. Headcase dominated the day with four straight wins, stretching clear of Jupiter and Hard on Port, who were locked in a close battle for second and third.
Elsewhere in the fleet, Blind Squirrel overcame a broken rudder on Day 1 to post consistent results. There were strong showings too from Il Riccio (Lough Erne YC), Stouche (Foynes YC), Hedgehog (Greystones SC), and Snoopy’s J, a new entry to the class from Courtown Sailing Club.
The Silver Fleet leaderboard also shifted, with Brian Raftery’s Hung Jury climbing to first overall, ahead of Yachtzee in second and local boat Jeb Stuart in third.
