Martin Mahon has won the J/24 Northern Championships at Carlingford Lough Yacht Club after a lack of consistent breeze prevented any racing on Sunday. With the fleet unable to add to the four races completed on Saturday, the overnight results stood as the final championship standings.
Mahon therefore takes the title after finishing level on seven points with Charles Heather and Mark Usher, prevailing on tie-break. Saturday’s racing had left the championship finely balanced, with all three crews carrying seven points into the scheduled final day.
Overnight Standings Become Final
Races 5 and 6 had been scheduled for Sunday, but conditions did not provide a sufficiently consistent breeze to get racing underway.
The cancellation meant Mahon’s Saturday scoreline of 5-4-2-1, with his fifth discarded, was enough to secure the championship. Heather finished second after scores of 3-5-1-3, while Usher took third with 2-2-3-3.
JP McCaldin finished fourth overall on nine points, with David Bailey fifth on 12 and Luke McBride sixth on 14. Fiachra Farrelly finished seventh overall and secured the leading Under-25 position on 15 points, while Tim Rippey was the leading Silver Fleet competitor in ninth overall.
As Afloat reported, the championship consequently concludes exactly as Saturday evening’s leaderboard stood, bringing an unusually tight J/24 Northerns to a weather-shortened finish.
