Howth’s Sienna Wright is firmly in the hunt at the 2026 ILCA 6 Under-21 World Championships in Lanzarote. Ireland’s sole competitor has climbed to seventh overall as the final series tightens.

Wright now counts 86 points after eight races. She sits 36 points off the podium with two decisive days still to sail.

Her scoreline includes a standout third-place finish amid challenging conditions. A retirement earlier in the series remains her discard.

Day four marked a shift into the championship’s final phase at Marina Rubicón. Every race now carries added weight as margins compress across both fleets.

Light and unstable winds greeted sailors early on Thursday. Conditions later settled at 9–12 knots from the west, with a matching current testing tactical judgement.

Two races were completed for all fleets. Precision and patience proved critical throughout the day.

Italy’s Ginevra Caracciolo extended her advantage with two race wins. She now leads Spain’s Irene de Tomás by 31 points.

Racing resumes on Friday with a 12:00 local start. Two days remain to decide the 2026 ILCA Under-21 world titles.

In the ILCA 7 fleet, Spain’s Karol Krupski reclaimed the overall men's lead. He is tied on 30 points with Slovenia’s Luka Zabukovec.

Spain’s Fernando Abella moved into third, ten points off the lead. “It was very tricky, with lots of shifts and pressure changes,” Abella said.

About the ILCA/Laser Dinghy

The ILCA, formerly known as the Laser, is the most produced boat in the world, with 220,000 units built since 1971.

It's easy to see why the single-handed dinghy has won the title of the most widely distributed boat of all time.

The Laser is a one-design dinghy, the hulls being identical but three rigs that can be used according to the size and weight of the sailor.

The class is international, with sailors from 120 countries. The boat has also been an Olympic class since 1996, being both the men's and women's singlehanded dinghy.

Three rigs are recognised by the International Laser Class Association (ILCA):

  • ILCA 4: sail of 4.70m2
  • ILCA 6: sail of 5.76 m2
  • ILCA 7: sail of 7.06 m2
