Ireland’s Sienna Wright remains firmly in contention for the women’s title at the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships after claiming another race victory as the Final Series began in strong winds on Aarhus Bay. Two races were completed for all fleets on Monday, 17 August, taking the championship to eight races after six had been sailed by the end of Day 3.

Wright began the day second overall on eight points, just three points behind Greece’s Hermionie Ghicas, and retained second place after adding a fifth and a victory in the opening two races of the Final Series. The Irish sailor is now on 14 points, just one behind Ghicas on 13, while New Zealand’s Chloe Turner is third on 30 points.

Ghicas had won the final five races of qualifying and then the opening race of Monday’s Final Series, giving her six consecutive victories before Wright brought that sequence to an end by winning Race 8.

Wright Holds Second as Irish Women Battle On

Wright’s overall position is unchanged from Day 3, but she has closed the gap to championship leader Ghicas from three points to just one. It continues an outstanding championship for Wright, whose first eight results are 3-1-2-1-1-(5)-5-1.

Further down the Irish women’s fleet, Abigail Murphy moved up two places, from 89th after Day 3 to 87th overall. She recorded 16th and 35th in Monday’s races and now counts 248 points. Siún Ní Choistealbha slipped four places, from 109th to 113th overall, after finishes of 54th and 45th. She is on 346 points.

Cronin Drops to 33rd as Shelley Climbs

There was considerably more movement among the Irish men as the fleet entered the Final Series.

Conor Cronin remains the leading Irish male sailor, although he dropped 16 places from 17th after Day 3 to 33rd overall. Cronin, who had recorded a second and a race win during qualifying, finished 47th and 62nd on Monday and now has 108 net points.

Marcus Shelley made one of Ireland’s strongest gains of the day, climbing 25 places from 123rd to 98th overall. Shelley won Race 7 before recording 45th in Race 8 and now counts 181 points.

Cormac Byrne moved in the opposite direction, slipping seven places from 138th to 145th, while Eolann Miles gained eight places, improving from 163rd to 155th after an excellent 13th and fifth.

Brennan-Hobbs and Dunne Make Big Gains

Two of the largest Irish moves came from Rory Brennan-Hobbs and Harry Dunne. Brennan-Hobbs climbed 40 places, from 197th after Day 3 to 157th overall, helped by finishes of seventh and 24th. Dunne made an even bigger jump, gaining 46 places from 218th to 172nd overall after recording ninth and 19th in Monday’s races.

Under-17 sailor Max O’Hare remained 176th overall, the same position he occupied after Day 3, following finishes of 48th and 16th. Joseph Robinson slipped 13 places, from 182nd to 195th, after a 59th and 41st.

There was another substantial improvement from Eduardo Gasset, who climbed 43 places from 248th to 205th overall. Gasset finished 68th in the first race before producing a sixth in Race 8. Fellow Under-17 sailor Jack Ives gained 11 places, moving from 248th to 237th, following finishes of 16th and ninth.

Strong Winds Open Final Series

Monday’s racing took place in gusty westerly winds ranging from 12 to 19 knots, providing a tougher test as the championship moved from qualifying into its Final Series.

Brazil’s Erik Scheidt took the overall lead in the men’s championship with a third and a victory, putting him on 18 points. Croatia’s Toma Smirčić is second on 23 points and Turkey’s Ali Özdemir third on 25.

For Ireland, the opening day of the Final Series produced two race victories through Wright and Shelley, while Brennan-Hobbs, Dunne and Gasset all made substantial gains in the overall standings.

The focus remains firmly on Wright at the front of the women’s fleet. Starting Day 4 three points off the championship lead, she finished only one point behind Ghicas, with the fight for the ILCA 6 Youth world title continuing on Tuesday.

About the ILCA/Laser Dinghy

The ILCA, formerly known as the Laser, is the most produced boat in the world, with 220,000 units built since 1971.

It's easy to see why the single-handed dinghy has won the title of the most widely distributed boat of all time.

The Laser is a one-design dinghy, the hulls being identical but three rigs that can be used according to the size and weight of the sailor.

The class is international, with sailors from 120 countries. The boat has also been an Olympic class since 1996, being both the men's and women's singlehanded dinghy.

Three rigs are recognised by the International Laser Class Association (ILCA):

  • ILCA 4: sail of 4.70m2
  • ILCA 6: sail of 5.76 m2
  • ILCA 7: sail of 7.06 m2
