The 2025 O’Dowd Cup, co-hosted by Malahide Yacht Club and Blessington Sailing Club, was a joyful celebration of Mirror dinghy sailing — packed with sunshine, skill-building, and spirited youth competition, writes Stuart Nelson
Twenty young sailors gathered for a weekend of learning and racing that captured everything the class stands for: community, resilience, and above all, teamwork.
A much-loved event on the Irish Mirror calendar, the O’Dowd Cup focuses not just on results, but on creating a space where young sailors can develop confidence, build friendships, and enjoy the magic of sailing together.
Saturday – Coaching & Preparation
Saturday kicked off under blue skies with boats launching from 10am. Sailors benefited from a day of hands-on coaching with Olympian and Mirror class champion Ger Owens, who shared practical tips on rigging, balance, boat handling, and spinnaker technique. His thoughtful guidance helped every team — from newcomers to seasoned racers — build their skills and get race-ready.

The afternoon featured short races and problem-solving exercises that gave young sailors a chance to practice under pressure while having fun. A few end-of-day swims added to the sense of community and high spirits.
Sunday – Youth Racing Takes Centre Stage
Sunday was all about the next generation. With Ger Owens not present for the second day, it was the youth sailors’ time to shine — putting Saturday’s learning into action and showing what they could do in a competitive setting.
Race Officer Russell Camier and his excellent team ran five well-organised races in building breeze. The young crews rose to the challenge, showing composure, determination, and impressive teamwork on the water. In particular, strong crewing stood out as a defining factor — with top-performing teams demonstrating excellent coordination, balance, and communication between helm and crew.
Race Highlights
Race 1 Molly & Freddie Nelson (Blessington SC) led to the top mark, but Michael Hanley & Ben Chaix (National YC / Tralee Bay SC) took the lead downwind and secured the win. Annika Flynn & Catherine Walsh took third with great consistency and control.
Race 2 Ollie Ryan & Aurele Dion (RstGYC/National YC) bounced back from earlier gear issues to dominate from start to finish. Their sharp teamwork was on full display. Michael/Ben and Molly/Freddie followed in second and third.
Race 3 A capsize at the top mark knocked Ollie/Aurele back, allowing Michael/Ben to take a second win. Molly/Freddie secured second, with Anneliese Rooney & Noah Caliendo (Sligo YC) charging through the fleet to take third.
Race 4 Challenging conditions tested the fleet, but Michael/Ben held steady to win again. Anneliese/Noah claimed second, and Molly/Freddie came third — showcasing steady crewing and clear tactical decisions.
Race 5 The final race saw a close battle between Michael/Ben and Ollie/Auriel, with tight teamwork at every gybe. A spinnaker issue shifted the order, allowing Molly/Freddie to move into second. Ollie/Auriel recovered to claim third. Michael/Ben sealed their fourth win of the day with cool consistency.

Teamwork
The weekend reminded everyone that Mirror sailing is a true team sport. The most successful teams weren’t just fast — they were well-balanced partnerships. Crews who are alert, calm, and balanced, and who spot shifts alongside their helms, made all the difference. It was inspiring to see young sailors supporting each other, adapting under pressure, and growing in confidence throughout the weekend.
A big thank you to Ger Owens for Saturday’s exceptional coaching, to Malahide Yacht Club for their warm hospitality, and to all the volunteers, parents, and sailors who made the weekend so special.
