The 2025 IODAI Sprint Series wrapped up this weekend in Dunmore East, capping off three weekends of intense Optimist racing at some of Ireland's top venues. The series opened at Royal Cork Yacht Club (RCYC) in Crosshaven on the 1st of March, moved to Malahide Yacht Club in Dublin on the 22nd of March, and finished at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club this past Sunday, with each leg delivering testing conditions and tight racing across the fleets.
Optimists prepare for the final leg of the 2025 IODAI Sprint Series at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club
The Sprint Series format, built around short, high-energy races, offered an ideal platform for sailors to sharpen their tactical skills while racing against peers from all over the country. Now in its second year, it has fast become a highlight of the early-season calendar for the Optimist class, helping sailors and coaches benchmark progress before Irish Sailing's Youth Nationals, which take place at the RStGYC next week. Sailors for the Irish Worlds, Europeans and IDT teams will be chosen based on next week's series.
Dougie Venner of RCYC emerged as the standout performer in the Senior Main Fleet. The Cork sailor delivered a composed and consistent series, finishing with a nett score of 18 points. His results included a race win at each venue and a string of top finishes that kept him clear of his closest challengers.
Second overall was Kate Spain (Royal St George Yacht Club/Howth Yacht Club). Spain came into her own during the final leg in Dunmore East, where her finishes included a race win and multiple podiums, helping her close the gap to Venner and finish with 26 nett points.
Taking third was Annabelle Wilson, representing both Kinsale Yacht Club and RCYC. Wilson started strong at the opening event in Crosshaven, notching top-two results in the early races, and remained steady throughout the series to earn a well-deserved place on the podium.
In the Junior Fleet, Oliver Ryan (RSGYC/MYC/HYC) claimed the overall title with a nett score of 62 points. Ryan's campaign was marked by consistent scoring across all three events, highlighted by a 3rd place finish in one of the early races and strong performances in Malahide.

Waterford Harbour Sailing Club's Oscar Rowan took second place overall. Rowan capitalised on home-water knowledge during the final leg to post strong results, including a 4th and a 6th, pushing him up the leaderboard. Rounding out the Junior podium was Jess Walsh from the Royal St George Yacht Club. Walsh, 12, showed resilience and consistency throughout, with some of her best scores coming during the more demanding conditions of the closing weekend.
From the steady sea breezes in Crosshaven to the chop of Dunmore East, the 2025 Sprint Series delivered a full spectrum of sailing conditions. The variety offered a valuable experience for all sailors, preparing them for this season's challenges.
Next up on the IODAI calendar are the regional regattas and the highly anticipated Irish Nationals later this summer.
