Ireland’s top Optimist sailors have been selected for the 2026 international competition following a demanding Youth Nationals at Ballyholme Yacht Club. Strong winds dominated the four-day event, testing both competitors and race officials.
Irish Sailing Coach Development Officer Liam Glynn said: “It was a challenging four days, with strong winds testing the resilience and competitiveness of our young sailors.” Despite conditions, six races were completed, delivering a valid series and clear selection outcomes.
IODAI President Jim Hughes said the event highlighted “determination, resilience, and talent within Irish youth sailing”. He added, “Despite the demanding conditions, our sailors rose to the challenge and demonstrated exceptional skill and sportsmanship throughout.”
The championships again served as the primary selection event for Ireland’s Optimist international squads.
Emily Donagh, Maeve Donagh, Phillipa Arthurs, Oscar Rowan and Holly Cantwell were named to the World Championships team. The European team includes Ruairí Slattery, Isaac Vaughan, Felix Crinion, Eoin Pierse, Jess Walsh, Lily Sheridan and Ava Molloy. The International Development Team features Jamie Blennerhassett, George Creighton, Brendan Hughes, Síofra Buckley, Kate Kovtun, Louis Trickett and Eabha Brennan-Hobbs.
Sailors will now prepare for summer regattas as they step onto the international stage.
IODAI thanked Irish Sailing, Ballyholme Yacht Club, race officials, coaches and volunteers for their support.
