The Irish SB20 fleet are making their last-minute preparations for their 2024 national championships, hosted by the RStGYC from 20th-22nd September. 19 entries had already been received by the early entry deadline of Saturday 7th September, with organisers hopeful that 1 or 2 more entries will be received before the final entry deadline of Thursday 19th September.
The event is shaping up to be the largest and most hotly contested in years, with several teams eyeing the coveted podium slots in both gold and silver fleets.
"We have a fantastic line up planned this year" said event co-organiser (and defending champion) Michael O'Connor, "both on and off the water." "This year, the fleet have had a particular emphasis on the new entrants to the fleet, as well as those improving their skills, with training sessions held throughout the summer to get those teams up to speed with their boat handling and setup."
"One suggestion that has been taken on board this year was from a relative newcomer to the fleet, Greg Kalinecki of Sportchip.ie (POL 3279). Greg suggested that we have an earlier split for gold and silver fleets, prior to the event start. That way, we hope to have more engaging, fun racing for everyone. We have a new trophy being awarded to the winner of the silver fleet, with prizes for 1,2 and 3 in both gold and silver fleets." O'Connor continued.
"10 races are planned over the three days, weather permitting. The fleet has the added bonus of having experienced RO Barry O'Neill and his team on board Brouette to ensure the smooth running of racing on the water".
