In Split, Croatia, Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi claimed victory in Race 2 of the 2025 Star World Championship. The day began with a 90-minute wait for the 101-boat fleet due to uncertain weather.
However, a steady 12-knot breeze emerged, providing excellent racing conditions. The race commenced at 2:30 pm, with most boats starting cleanly, thanks to the Vakaros RaceSense system.
Early tactical moves shaped the race, with many top sailors opting for the right side of the course. Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Bruno Prada led at the top mark, closely followed by Eric Doyle and Jim Buckingham.
On the first downwind leg, Koy and Merkelbach narrowed the gap, while Kusznierewicz and Prada retained their lead. The second upwind saw Merkelbach and Koy excel, rounding the mark first, followed by Negri and Lambertenghi.
In a decisive downwind leg, Negri and Lambertenghi surged to the front, finishing first. “We were not far from the leading group, and our downwind speed helped us win the race,” said Negri.
Merkelbach commented, “It was a very close race. We might have even won, but congrats to Diego; he deserved it.”
Negri and Lambertenghi now lead the overall rankings. Race 3 is scheduled for tomorrow, with a potentially strong southerly breeze on the way.
