American Magic Quantum Racing has won the Rolex TP52 World Championship, finishing just a point ahead of France’s Paprec in Cascais, Portugal. This victory marks the team’s eighth world championship title.
After five days of racing off the Portuguese coast, teams faced challenging Atlantic swells and changing winds. The event featured seven different race winners, highlighting the depth of talent in the fleet.
Doug DeVos, the team owner of American Magic, praised the crew’s focus and teamwork. Tactician Terry Hutchinson stated, “We were challenged all the way through this year’s championship. The mental strength the team showed was impressive.”
Entering the final race with a two-point lead, American Magic had to fend off a determined effort from Paprec. Despite finishing ahead, the French crew could not secure enough positions to overtake the Americans. Hutchinson noted the contributions of younger team members, emphasising the importance of building experience for future generations.
Harry Melges IV, the helmsman, became the youngest to win this title. He led a team that included Sarah Stone, making history as the first female navigator to win the championship.
