J24 World Champion and triple European Champion Sam O’Byrne has presented his international sailing medals to Howth Yacht Club (HYC), recognising the club’s role in his journey to the top.
At HYC’s annual Achievers Awards, O’Byrne gifted his World and European Championship medals from 2025, along with framed photos of his victorious boat, Headcase, to Commodore Kevin Monks and Rear Commodore Jill Sommerville.
A lifelong HYC member and product of its U25 K25 keelboat programme, O’Byrne praised the club’s long-term investment in young sailors. “I would never have become a J24 World Champion without the Under 25 keelboat programme at HYC,” he said.
The K25 squad was formally launched in 2012. “It gave us not just a boat, but a framework to run a proper campaign — to travel, fundraise, and compete internationally,” O’Byrne added.
Headcase is the only team in J24 class history to win the U25 European and World Championships, and then go on to claim the full senior titles in both competitions — a feat O’Byrne says reflects the depth of support at HYC.
“That achievement belongs as much to Howth Yacht Club as it does to us,” he said. “The culture of backing young sailors so completely is rare and incredibly powerful.”
The Headcase team is not done yet. They plan to defend their European title in Sweden this August and will head to Melbourne for the World Championships in November.
