Dublin Bay sailor and race committee boat official Hilda Byrne of Dun Laoghaire has died, following a long illness.
She passed away on 13 November 2025 in the compassionate care of the Sisters and staff of Our Lady’s Manor, Dalkey.
Hilda (née Tierney) was the beloved wife of the late John Byrne, former Commodore of both the National Yacht Club and Greystones Sailing Club.
Well known in Dublin Bay sailing circles, she was a dedicated race committee boat official and an ever-present supporter of local racing.
Her family said she was a loyal supporter of her children's, grandchildren's, and three great-granddaughters' sailing activities, particularly her daughter, Aisling Bowman's, Olympic campaigns.
According to the family notice, “She is deeply regretted by her loving children, Martin, Rory, Aisling and Killian, brother John and sister Mary, grandchildren, great-granddaughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and many loving friends.”
She is also remembered alongside her late brother, Fr Martin, and sister, Clare.
Reposing will take place in Quinn’s Funeral Home, Glasthule, on Monday, 17 November, from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, 18 November at 10 am in St Joseph’s Church, Glasthule, with a livestream available at churchservices.tv/glasthule.
Burial will follow in Shanganagh Cemetery.
The family has requested that donations, if desired, be made to the RNLI.
