Royal Cork U25 Crew Makes Winning Return in J/24 July League Debut

The Royal Cork Yacht Club's revived Under-25 keelboat programme has made an immediate impact after winning the penultimate race of the club's July League on its first outing of the season.

Sailing the J/24 Jambalaya, the young crew claimed IRC honours on corrected time, finishing ahead of Ria Lyden's Elida in second and Tim McCarthy and Wan Watermans' Joyride in third.

The successful crew comprised Sam Tanner, Dara Jenkins, Michael Egan, Ruby Foley and Kate Deane.

The victory followed weeks of work to recommission Jambalaya. The project was supported by Tom Mapplebeck, whose assistance helped return the boat to competitive racing.

Attention now turns to the J/24 National Championships in Foynes. The team plans to continue training over the coming weeks before competing in the Triple Crown Series and the Royal Cork Yacht Club's October League later this season.

"The Royal Cork Yacht Club is delighted to see its U25 keelboat programme back on the water," the club said.

It also paid tribute to Sam Tanner and Michael Egan, whose commitment and effort were described as instrumental in re-establishing the programme for 2026.

The result marks an encouraging start for the rejuvenated initiative, with the young crew immediately demonstrating its potential against experienced club competition.

The Royal Cork Yacht club is in Crosshaven, Co Cork, a village on lower Cork Harbour some 20km south-east of Cork city centre and on the Owenabue river that flows into Cork Harbour.

When was the Royal Cork Yacht Club founded?

The club was founded as The Water Club of the Harbour of Cork in 1720, in recognition of the growing popularity of private sailing following the Restoration of King Charles II. The monarch had been known to sail a yacht on the Thames for pleasure, and his interest is said to have inspired Murrough O’Brien, the 6th Lord Inchiquin — who attended his court in the 1660s and whose grandson, William O’Brien, the 9th Lord Inchiquin, founded the club with five friends.Originally based on Haulbowline Island in inner Cork Harbour, the club moved to nearby Cobh (then Cove) in 1806, and took on its current name in 1831. In 1966 the club merged with the Royal Munster Yacht Club and moved to its current premises in Crosshaven.
