Lough Swilly Yacht Club (LSYC) in County Donegal is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The club was founded in February 1955, beginning at the old City Hotel.
Dr. T.E. Hastings served as the first Commodore, assisted by James McColgan and Stephen Faller. Under their leadership, the club gradually developed.
LSYC acquired the old railway station at Fahan after the railway closed in 1953. This site has been the club's home since opening day, 2 July 1955.
The first race gathered boats and members for an afternoon of tea and prizegiving. This event set a tone of community spirit that continues to this day. LSYC has expanded its facilities over the years, including a slipway and a clubhouse. Today, it comprises sailors, powerboaters, and dinghy enthusiasts.
"From our first race, LSYC has been at the heart of our local sailing community," said LSYC Rear Commodore Leanne Thompson.
This anniversary marks a milestone for the club, with special events planned for 2025. "Here’s to 70 more years on the water," Thompson added.
LSYC hosted the Portsalon Bells Race on 17 May 2025, benefiting from excellent racing conditions. Participants faced an 11.5-mile beat and a spinnaker run to Portsalon Pier.
Hooligan won in the IRC fleet, while L'escargot triumphed in the Club class.
The race concluded in under 2.5 hours, marking a successful start to the summer season. The club’s programme continues with the White Harte Cup on 31 May, featuring diverse racing formats.
