There was enormous expectation surrounding Eve McMahon when the ILCA 6 Women’s World Championship came to Dublin Bay in September. The Howth Yacht Club sailor arrived on home waters after a season which had already established her among the leading performers in the international fleet.
But a World Championship brings its own pressures, and McMahon responded by securing her place among the ten sailors who progressed to the Medal Series before finishing seventh overall, ending the championship with a third place in the final race.
McMahon’s performance followed the ILCA 7 Worlds on Dublin Bay in August, where fellow Irish Olympic campaigner Finn Lynch finished eighth overall and was subsequently named Afloat.ie’s Sailor of the Month (Olympic) for August. Together, the results saw Ireland’s leading ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 campaigners both reach the top-ten finals at their respective home World Championships.
It is another significant marker in a season which has seen the 22-year-old Eve steadily build towards her ultimate target. She won in Palma, took silver in Hyères and then bronze on the future Olympic waters in Los Angeles before producing another top-ten World Championship performance in Dún Laoghaire.
The next stage of that journey is already in sight. McMahon's campaign now turns towards the 2027 ILCA 6 World Championship in Fortaleza, Brazil, which will provide the first qualification opportunity for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Her progress towards LA 2028 can be followed through Afloat's Eve McMahon hub and the LA 2028 Olympic Regatta hub, while the complete home World Championship coverage is gathered in the ILCA Worlds 2026 hub.
