A technology tycoon of Irish descent is among six people missing after a superyacht sank in extreme weather off Sicily early on Monday morning (19 August).
According to RTÉ News, the 56-metre luxury yacht Bayesian capsized during a sudden storm that swept through the area where it was moored near Palermo.
Specialist divers have been searching for six people missing from the yacht, including its owner Mike Lynch — a British tech magnate of Irish descent whose wife was among the 15 people rescued after the incident.
The body of one man, understood to be the vessel’s chef, was recovered near the wreck site, some 50 metres below the surface, as Sky News reports.
Local media reports that waterspouts — essentially tornadoes that form over water — were spotted as the freak weather system moved through the area.
