Dublin City Council is seeking tenders from commercial operators to take over the replica famine ship Jeanie Johnston on a five-year contract.

The three-masted barque Jeanie Johnston was launched in May 2000 as a Millennium project to commemorate 150 years since An Gorta Mór.

The tall ship was purchased by the former Dublin Docklands Development Authority in September 2005 and was operated during 2007 and 2008 by River Cruise Ireland, completing a successful programme of sail training and port visits, and was also available for corporate hire and as a museum attraction.

While no longer seaworthy, the ship remains a popular tourist attraction and as a famine museum and event venue in the Dublin Docklands and is currently open daily with on- and off-peak tour times.

It is proposed to relocate the Jeanie Johnston from its current location immediately east of the Sean O’Casey pedestrian bridge to a new pontoon nearby, subject to Part 8 planning approval and capital funding being available.
