Gold medallists Daniel Copithorne and Matt Mapplebeck celebrate on the podium with silver winners William Walsh and Eoin Byrne, and bronze pair Cora Naughton and Isha Duggan at the Junior Champions Cup in Schull

The Junior Champions Cup ended in bright sunshine and steady winds at the Fastnet Marine & Outdoor Education Centre, Schull, West Cork on Sunday, 21 September, after light airs delayed Saturday’s opener.

Sixteen helms and their crews lined up at 9:00 am, with racing starting at 9:30. Six qualifying heats decided the ten boats for the medal race.

Local sailor Daniel Copithorne and crew Matt Mapplebeck took gold in the final. William Walsh and Eoin Byrne from Dún Laoghaire secured silver, while defending champions Cora Naughton and Isha Duggan placed third.

Irish Sailing Racing Manager Stephen O’Shaughnessy said the competition showed “an array of talent coming through the youth system”. He praised competitors for handling a one-design dinghy, the TR3.6, a purpose-built two-person team racing dinghy that many had never sailed before.

Race Officer Nigel Biggs and a team of umpires, mark layers and safety staff were thanked for running the event “with military precision”.
